Eating sugar cane by the moonlight… Not eating really, but peeling it, chewing on it, sucking out the juice and then spitting out the pulp. That’s how you really enjoy raw sugar cane. I just learned that this evening actually. My neighbor gave me a large stalk of cane, and I looked at it blankly and said, “No se comer esta.” Her children were enjoying their stalks – biting off chunks and chewing, and then when they saw the puzzled gringa, they all laughed. So did I. Ah, how I adore cultural exchanges…
So I learned two things today – masticar means to chew and how to masticar sugar cane.
After chewing the sugar cane, listening to the rumblings of an approaching thunderstorm, and compartir-ing for a while, my neighbor gave me some platano maduros, avocado, and boiled guineos (bananas) for my dinner. Everyone has been so generous, so giving, I simply don’t know how I’m going to repay all these kindnesses.
I love everything I've read so far...I haven't read a whole lot, but the way you write is really captivating, and I can totally feel your experiences through your words. This should definitely turn into a book when you're back here ;) Take care! Un abrazote! Love,
